HAIP revises halal policy

HalalAssure-IP (HAIP) has reissued its Halal Certification policy to ensure a trained slaughter-man is present during the time of slaughter. 

This comes after the halal body observed human involvement during the slaughters and discussed the importance of animal welfare with experts, as well as studying reports on the subject. The research concluded that regardless as to whether or not the animal is halal or non-halal, a well-trained and experienced slaughterer should be at hand to achieve the level of welfare expected.

As of 1 December 2015, all abattoirs wishing to either apply for or renew their halal certification under the HAIP standard will need to ensure they have a licensed slaughter-man on location that has been trained and approved by HAIP.

It is hoped that this will assist in achieving a higher standard of animal welfare when producing halal and tayyab meat. In addition, HAIP has claimed that abattoirs will not have to bear any extra costs of appointing halal monitors, but instead, it should reduce the cost of halal meat. The policy is expected to result in an economic impact, as well as reaffirming consumer confidence within the halal division.

In order to implement the policy, HAIP has designed an in-house training course where participants will receive theoretical and practical training before being appointed to any abattoirs to carry out the halal slaughtering.

The slaughter-man training will be provided by industry experts who have an expansive knowledge into the sector.
