Mr Meats abattoir has licence suspended

A Birmingham abattoir has had its licence suspended following a Food Standards Agency (FSA) investigation.

Mr Meats in Digbeth in Birmingham was subject to an investigation after complaints had been made by residents and neighbouring businesses over a nine-year period. The complaints centred around smells coming from the premises, while photos, submitted as part of the complaints, showed animal carcases piled up and blood on the ground.

The FSA had warned that it would take action if the abattoir didn’t improve the conditions.

The FSA said: “The Food Standards Agency has taken the decision to suspend this abattoir’s licence to operate, until further assurances can be provided in relation to serious deficiencies which include the correct disposal of animal by products.”

Local councillor Peter Douglas Osborn condemned the length of time it took to investigate the abattoir. He said: “The issue seemed to fall between the city council and the FSA. It was very unsatisfactory.”
