A recent BPEX regional roadshow and product evaluation event for butchers saw a dad and his 14-year-old daughter both walk away as category champions.

The two, from Bradwell Butchery in Great Yarmouth, took home top honours in the Speciality Cold Eating Pie and Young Sausage Maker categories at the East Midlands event.

The event saw a 36 butchers entering 170 products for evaluation.

Aspiring young butcher, Megan Edmonds, entered the competition for the first time with her traditional pork sausage.

The judges were so impressed that Megan was also crowned Supreme Sausage Champion and qualifies to take part in the national sausage championship next year.

Andrew Edmonds, Megan's father and owner of Bradwell Butchery, was Speciality Cold Eating Pie champion with his Family Steak Pie.

Megan said: "I've been helping my dad make sausages in his shop since I was 10 years old. I really enjoy working in the butchery and may join the family business full time when I leave school.

I've seen my dad enter products at the roadshows before and thought it would be great to enter a sausage I had created to see how well I could do.

"Being awarded two golds and also being crowned Supreme Sausage Champion is amazing. I was left to create the recipes alone and as I really like oranges I thought mixing orange and ginger spices together would work really well - which it did! My dad is now going to sell it in his shop."

Andrew added: "I'm over the moon for Megan - she worked really hard on her recipes and I can see that she would be a huge asset to the family business if she decided to join full time after she leaves school.

"I've been in the butchery trade for 30 years and to be acknowledged for my products by my peers is tremendous.

"We achieved a few gold awards last year, and with the judges feedback we altered the salt content in the pie and re-entered the same product for evaluation. The judges certainly know what they are looking for because now we're category winners."
