Buchanan’s launches innovative range of meat products

Northern Irish-based Buchanan’s has launched a unique range of meat products to grow the business year-round.

The company, a free-range turkey business located near Kilrea in Co Derry, has introduced lamb burgers, mutton steaks, original flavoured sausages and bacon to diversify its range.

“While our turkey business has been going well, especially around holiday periods such as Christmas, we saw an opportunity to build on our reputation for quality products and grow the year-round business by moving into other meats, particularly lamb and pork,” said Jonathan Buchanan, managing director of the company.

Buchanan explained that the lamb burger, called the Yo Yo Burger, was named after the Northern Irish traditional name for a female lamb, a Yo. “It’s a versatile, convenient and tasty way for consumers to enjoy lamb, especially in season,” he added.

“The burger is made from lambs finished on our farm in Co Derry. We believe the new burgers and pork sausages represent a substantial extension on our retail offering. The sausages feature high pork content with different flavourings such as mango and curry, along with pork and apple, pork and whole grain mustard and pork and leek.”

Also included in the range is dry-cured bacon, which is processed without using any additives.

“All the products are made on the farm, which ensures complete traceability and provenance. The mutton steaks are also attracting attention because of their rich flavour.”

The newly launched products are available from the company and local farmers’ markets, with the aim of getting listed in local retailers. This is the business’ first move towards retail packaged products.
