Aldi to launch premium quality wagyu steaks

Discounters Aldi is set to launch a range of quality premium wagyu steaks.

The new range is made up of Specially Selected Wagyu Ribeye Beef Steak and Specially Selected Wagyu Sirloin Steak, with a retail price of £7.29 for 8oz/299g, compared with an upmarket restaurant price of £40 per 100g, as featured on the menu at MASH London; Modern American Steakhouse.

Aldi’s Wagyu steaks will be sourced from cattle that are both bred and 100% grass-fed on open New Zealand pastures, giving them a unique flavour and texture. The good covering of marbelling ensures the steaks become tender when the fat is imparted into the meat.

“By sourcing from only the finest Wagyu producers in New Zealand, Aldi continues to offer unique and premium quality at everyday low prices, providing customers with significant savings without compromise,” said Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi.

The supermarket chain has been working with farmers in New Zealand for the past two years to produce the best possible quality steak.

Over the past 12 months, Aldi has sold 1.5 million Specially Selected Wagyu Beef Burgers. With 50,000 steaks being made available to consumers later this month, the supermarket is set to become a leading retailer in the UK of wagyu beef.

Aldi expects demand to be strong, with consumers limited to only two steaks per purchase.
