Butcher's Shop deadline extended
Published:  09 August, 2007

Butchers are being given an extra week's grace to be in with a chance of being declared the UK's best butcher.

The deadline for entries to MTJ's Butcher's Shop of the Year awards has been extended to August 17.

Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said: "What with all the events surrounding foot-and-mouth in the last week, its understandable that entering awards is not going to be foremost in butcher's minds, so we've decided to extend the deadline to give them a bit of breathing space to focus on dealing with the crisis and still have a chance to enter our exciting awards.

"I'd urge all of you to get your entries in. These awards are a great way of acknowledging the excellence in our sector and they're also a great boost for your business. Previous winners of seen sales climb by up to 25%."

As well as the six regions - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Midlands & East, North England and South England - returning categories Farm Shop of the Year, Butcher's Plus and Innovation of the Year will also feature, as will a new award for Young Butcher of the Year. The entry deadline for Young Butcher is still 31 August.

Another new category will be an award for Lifetime Achievement, honouring one of the industry's leading figures for their contribution to the sector.

Supporting this year's awards are: Danish Bacon & Meat Council, EBLEX, HCC - Meat Promotion Wales, Lucas Ingredients, Scotch Butchers Club, Weddel Swift, Harmony Farm, Bizerba, Tican Chilled and BPEX. The Meat Training Council has also joined our sponsors, supporting the Young Butcher of the Year award.

The show will again be taking place at Claridges on 20 November. For entry forms and further details, contact Stephanie Smallwood on 01293 867654, or email her on stephanie.smallwood@william-reed.co.uk.
