Cold weather set to impact weekend barbecue sales

Ahead of the second round of games at the European Championships, businesses have been warned to brace for some cool weather.

According to business weather intelligence specialist Planalytics, temperatures will drop compared to the same time last year.

“This weekend sees much cooler conditions than last year and this will negatively impact sales of cold drinks, barbecue foods, summer apparel and reduce demand for alfresco dining – expect to see sales significantly down on last year from Friday onwards as this continues into next week. On a more positive note, drier conditions arrive for much of the UK for Friday to Sunday and this will help drive footfall.”

A heatwave last month led to some strong sales for butchers. Danny Lidgate of London-based C. Lidgate said it created decent footfall for him and that sunshine generated more sales than football.

“The first hot weekend of the year was incredible and we had a record Saturday. But the England games don’t have that much impact. If they do well, then there will be more interest, but it’s often not a sales driver for us.”
