Interest in West Country PGI beef and lamb grows

West Country Beef and West Country Lamb labels have seen a boost in attention from global consumers. 

There is a growing appetite for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) meat across the continent, with Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize starting to stock West Country Beef in its stores.

This comes after Italian chef Simone Rugiati took part in a short video promoting English beef and lamb.

“The Italian promotion was extremely successful and we are hopeful more will follow,” said Ed Green, chairman of Meat South West.

“The Belgian deal is another important step forward in the recognition of high-quality grass-fed West country beef.”

To gain status, beef and lamb must be at least 70% forage-fed and come from stock born, raised and finished in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Dorset or Wiltshire.
