Irish butcher welcome grants

Irish butchers have welcomed the announcement by their government of a new grant scheme which will benefit small abattoirs and local processors.

Associated Craft Butchers of Ireland's chief executive Pat Brady, said that the announcement, by Mary Coughlan TD, represented the reversal of a policy which cut a swathe through the same sector in the late 90's closing many viable and safe businesses unnecessarily and depriving local, and especially rural communities of the fruits of their own produce.

Now with increased appreciation of the value of locally produced food both for quality, safety and environmental reasons the light has finally been switched on as to the value of these artisan producers and their products, he said

Irish consumers like to know where their food comes from and the closer to home the better.

"ACBI shares the Minister's confidence that this round of funding will stimulate significant investment in the sectors concerned to the benefit of lovers of good Irish food," Brady said.
