Walter Rose & Son wins Butcher’s Shop of the Year 2016

After years of being a finalist, Wiltshire-based Walter Rose & Son has scooped the top prize of Butcher’s Shop of the Year 2016. 

Founded in 1847, Walter Rose & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire is run by Steve Cook. The business sources local produce from just a few miles away and boasts top quality products, not just in meat but in deli, fish and cheese categories.

Picking up the prize at the event at Banking Hall, London, Steve Cook described the win as “phenomenal”. “It’s an amazing achievement. To win a competition like this, an accolade that everyone wants to win, is phenomenal. After being a regional winner so many times, I really didn’t think it was on the cards.”

He said the business has stuck to its beliefs over the years and maintained a high level of quality. “I’ve been running Walter Rose & Son for 40 years and we’ve always stuck by our principles. Always believed in quality and service and were never price-orientated. There’s a lot of hard work and belief in what we do.”

Rod Addy, editor of Meat Trades Journal, said the consistent raising of standards at Walter Rose & Son won it for them. “The development of the business overall is impressive. A lot of thought has been put into areas like new product development and engaging with customers as well as the community at large.

“For a butcher to be so consistently good and deliver high quality on a regular basis is quite an achievement. Their trading environment is so tough with lots of competition but they shrugged off all of that. It’s more than just financial investment, they demonstrated the ideas and passion they have for the business.”

He added that it shows that even the best businesses can take it one step further. “If you’re a finalist, don’t be disheartened as you could be the overall winner next year,” said Addy. “Learn from this year’s winners and finalist, as they’re all high achievers. Take what they’ve done, make it your own and bring something new to the table.”

Industry legend Keith Fisher was also honoured at the event. He was given a Special Contribution Award for his 40 years in the industry and for being a “tireless champion of skills, quality and standards”.
