Hoping for a smoother ride in 2017

2016 was certainly a different year especially in the celebrity world. Between the ‘romance’ of Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift and the deaths of David Bowie and George Michael, there were more than a few highs and lows to shake things up!

Meanwhile, as usual, the meat trade did not disappoint with its own ups and downs. It certainly was a rollercoaster ride all round for the industry. That said, we have to remain confident that 2017 is going to be a better year and that trade will be, shall we say, simpler.

Personally, I’m hoping for a steadier market over the next 12 months, as the sharp price increases across the board for red meat, which we saw last year, did nothing to help the wholesale sector – especially the rocketing pork prices, which definitely hampered sales.

On the positive side, the wholesale and independent retail sectors are well-positioned to service their marketplaces and customers.

However, I would argue that more communication with the public is needed to promote the independent sector. Full marks and hats off to American Express for supporting local businesses, as it continues to offer shoppers cashback on purchases from small shops, for example.

But more can and should be done in this area.
