Halal meat fraud duo found guilty

Two Leicester businessman have been found guilty of conspiracy to fraud. 

Mahmudur Rohman and Kamal Rahman were found guilty at Leicester Crown Court after a Trading Standards Investigation discovered they were selling turkey mince to butchers and restaurants, and claiming it was halal lamb.

The duo, who ran Dutch Bangla Direct, are estimated to have gained as much as £250,000 in profit from the deceit. The business had imported 116 tonnes of turkey meat between 2012 and 2014.

Leicester City Council Trading Standards first started the investigation 21 months ago.

Mohammed Anwarul Hoque, and Mohammed Zunaid Hoque, both of Uplands Road, Oadby, Leicester, were cleared of all charges.

Sentencing is scheduled for 11 April 2017.
