Butcher ‘thrilled’ by royal recognition

A Welsh butcher has become one of an exclusive club of 16 Royal Warrant Holders in Wales, and is the only butcher in the country to achieve the recognition.

Mathews Butchers in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, has been granted a Royal Warrant to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, after supplying the Prince with red meat for the past eight years. During this period, Prince Charles, who has a residence near the village of Myddfai, also paid a visit to the family butchers.

“It is a real honour for us to supply Welsh Lamb, Welsh Beef and pork from Wales to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales,” said Dai Mathews, who started the business in 1988 with his wife Marcia and sons Dewi and Rhys. “We normally deliver up to Prince Charles or one of his chefs will call in.”

A plaque will be made specially for the accolade, which will be displayed on the outside wall of the business and on its van, while a certificate will be displayed in the store.

“We are thrilled to be recognised for our top quality produce and to be Royal Warrant Holders,” continued Mathews, whose business is a member of Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales’ (HCC) Butchers’ Club. “As far as we know, there are only 16 warrant holders in Wales with us being the only butcher. There are just over 800 Royal Warrant Holders in the UK so it is a great privilege to receive this honour, which can only be earned and not bought.”

HCC’s market development manager, Rhys Llywelyn added: “It’s great news that one of our Butchers’ Club members has been recognised by the Royal Family as a trusted supplier.

“All our members have been verified as selling fully traceable Welsh meat that holds the coveted PGI status, and we are thrilled that the Prince of Wales and his guests are given an opportunity to enjoy the very best Welsh Lamb and Beef during their visits to the area.”
