Competing on a global scale
Published:  18 July, 2017

Well, what can I say about the World Butchers’ Challenge, other than the 2018 competition in Belfast is going to be the world’s biggest butchery competition to date.

With more than 12 countries now taking part, the bar will certainly have been raised. Countries like America, South Africa, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece and many more are all out to take the elite title of the world’s best butchers.

Having been part of of Team GB for over two years now, I feel that taking part in such competitions, at all levels, is crucial to promoting not only the industry, but educating the general public and future generations about the different aspects that the industry can provide for a career.

For me, on a personal level, being a part of Team GB/British Beefeaters has given me a great platform to build on, and has opened so many doors for me to be able to promote the trade, as well as starting my own business, Tom Wood Artisan Butcher.

Being a part of a six-man team that thrives off the industry gives you that extra buzz. Team members all share knowledge and ideas, not only among themselves, but by talking to fellow butchers from around the world and making new contacts. It opens your eyes to new, exciting products out there.

And one thing’s for certain: I won’t rest until Team GB get their hands on that trophy.
