British Beefeaters announce World Butchers’ Challenge team

The British Beefeaters have announced the six butchers who will be representing the country at the World Butchers’ Challenge 2018. 

The new teammates joining returning members, Tom Wood (team captain) from Tom Wood Artisan Butcher in Lancashire and Michael Dufton from Knitsley Farm Shop in County Durham are: Mark Ramsay of Falleninch Farm; Simon Taylor of Surrey Hills Butchers; Bryce Lawson of McMurchie Meats; and Jessica Leliuga of Ye Olde Sausage Shop. Leliuga is the first woman to represent the country in the competition.

"We were looking for that extra spark and quality," said Wood. "And they certainly provided the wow factor and a very tough decision. We congratulate all our finalists on a cracking achievement."

The World Butchers’ Challenge 2018 is set to be the biggest yet, with The British Beefeaters competing against teams from 11 other countries in the hopes of being named the best butchers in the world.

"The standard of applicants has never been so high as this year, and getting to this level is a great achievement," commented Danny Upson of Dalziel and chair of the World Butchers' Challenge UK Council Committee.

"Importantly, this is about raising the profile of the butchery industry and raising standards as a craft to be proud of."

Taking place from 20-21 March 2018 at the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the best butchers from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Bulgaria, Spain, South Africa, Germany, Greece, Italy, USA and reigning champion France will battle it out in a gruelling competition that will test their skills, innovation, teamwork, display and hygiene, with the aim of being named the best.

The British Beefeaters' reserves are Mick Foley of Mainstream Foods and Peter Harrison of Dalziel. The team's sponsors are Dalziel, Lucas Ingredients and The Institute of Meat.
