Cured meats company joins snacking revolution

Northern Irish firm Ispini Charcuterie is taking a novel approach to encourage consumers to try its hand-cured meats as an on-the-go snack. 

Inspired by the seaside classic, the ’99 Flake, the Co Tyrone business, based on a family farm, has created an Ispini ’99, made up of a selection of charcuterie meats in a paper cone designed for the snacking market.

“Charcuterie is a relatively new food category in Northern Ireland,” said pig farmer Jonathan Cuddy, who formed the company in 2016 with his sister Janice. “What we’ve been focusing on is creating awareness of hand-cured meats by coming up with ideas that make it easy for people to taste and enjoy the wide range of meats that we are now producing. Fermentation is a growing trend particularly in the Republic [of Ireland] and Britain.

“So developing the ’99 cone concept that people here identify with, to feature cured meats, seemed a good way to encourage more people to enjoy our charcuterie.”

The innovative cone is available for £3 and can be found at farmers’ markets and other sampling opportunities. Cuddy added: “The Ispini ’99 is an ideal hand-held snack, and we are seeing significant growth in quality and original ‘food on-the-go’ snacks. Charcuterie meats make a deliciously different snack. We recognised from the start of our small business that we had to be different and original to develop a market here for charcuterie products.”

Ispini’s portfolio consists of a range of products including chorizo, chorizo sticks, fennel salami and lomo, available in delis across Northern Ireland and targeting business in the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.
