Chicken scandal provides opportunity for butchers
Published:  02 October, 2017

The latest meat scandal to rock the industry has given butchers a welcome sales boost.

Last week, a report from the The Guardian and ITV alleged 2 Sisters Food Group had breached hygiene and food safety controls.

The story made a number of allegations, including: returned chicken was repackaged and redistributed at the meat processor’s West Bromwich plant; produce that had fallen on the factory floor was returned to the slaughter line; staff altered slaughter dates; and batches of chicken had been mixed together with meat that had different use-by dates.

On the back of this scandal, butchers across the nation have seized the opportunity to promote the ‘Butcher is Best’ ethos, with some already reporting a boost in sales. Using social media as a platform, consumers have been reminded that butchers adhere to high-quality food standards.

2 Sisters responded to the allegations, claiming that it maintained a high standard of hygiene and food safety levels.
