Christmas products awarded at national competition

Some of the best Christmas products to come out of the country’s butchers for 2017 have been honoured at the inaugural National Festive Meat Products competition. 

Organised by the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders (NFMFT), over 60 butchers gathered at the Windmill Lodge Hotel Coventry as part of the Autumn Roadshow.

The Cold Eating Pie and Festive Product of the Day went to Paul Swain of Owen Taylor & Sons Ltd in Derbyshire with the Turkey and Cranberry Pork Pie. Meanwhile, Damon Buckingham of Buckingham’s Artisan Butchery in Southwark won four out of nine awards for Festive Fresh Meat Roast, Mini Ham, Pigs in Blankets and Innovative Festive Product for his Traditional Porchetta Christmas Roast.

Edis of Ely in Cambridgeshire won the FEstive Stuffing category with a Cranberry and Apple Stuffing. Andrew Ringrose from Broughton Abbey in Leicestershire won the Festive Poultry Roast with a Yuletide Layer Roast whilst Woods Butcher’s in Liverpool won the Festive Chipolata with a Caramelised Onion and Cracked Black pepper sausage.

Among the 60 entries, 27 Gold, 24 Siler and two Bronze medals were awarded after products were judged by Graham Palfrey, Jack Tuckley, Derek White and John taylor MBE.

During the roadshow, attendees were able to benefit from two Butchers’ Forums chaired by NFMFT CEO Roger Kelsey. Butchers were able to learn about tips and opportunities that will benefit them during the Christmas season. Presentations were also given by Mike Richardson from the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board, Danny Upson of Dalziel, Alex Farr on Innovative Food Ingredients, Eleanor Lelliot of Leonards Ingredients, Steve Derrick of Lucas Ingredients and John Gallagher of McDonnells.
